The SCA Varsity Girls' Basketball Team hosted fellow 2A Metro Region school the Veritas Prep Falcons on Wednesday evening.
Coach Alan Mitchell selected his sixth different starting lineup of this abbreviated season, with senior Kathryn Dick (#35) and juniors Allyson Lund (#11), Baylee Tobin (#21), Savannah Cardona (#22) and Lily Richardson (#44) to open the game.
The Eagles began the evening with some good defensive displays that continued on throughout the evening, highlighted by stops from Lily Richardson, steals by Savannah Cardona, and shot blocking by Kathryn Dick and Baylee Tobin. Baylee Tobin also jump-started the SCA offense, doing the tough work inside to earn scores the hard way and from the charity stripe, while Kathryn Dick supervised execution in the three-point range, the short corner and the power slot. Savannah Cardona’s steals led to break-away buckets, and the first quarter ended with the Eagles in the driver’s seat, up 14-4.
SCA tightened the screws on defense in the second quarter, and as a result Savannah Cardona led a parade of transition baskets initiated by defensive stops, followed up immediately by Lily Richardson in a similar series to engage the full and undivided attention of the scoreboard operator. Not to be outdone, Allyson Lund also took a steal coast-to-coast and earned her corn in the low post as well. Sophomore Ana Faustinos (#32) took advantage of rapid ball movement on the perimeter to hit the trey from the left corner, and Savannah Cardona replicated this feat twice more to see SCA take a 31-8 lead into the halftime break.
Leading scorer Savannah Cardona opened the second half from three-point range as the Eagles worked the ball around the perimeter with speed and efficiency. As the Falcons’ defense began to fray, this opened seams into which Savannah Cardona’s probing drives, Kathryn Dick’s entry passes, Ana Faustino’s slashing scores, and Lily Richardson’s jump shooting proved productive. Lily Richardson also served up some exquisite second half pocket passing for Baylee Tobin to convert, as well as finishing on the break to extend the SCA advantage to 52-10 after three periods of stifling defense and good team offense.
In the final period freshmen Bree Tobin (#3), Julia Claus (#10), Ashlyn Fink (#25) and Izzy Thiessen (#30) took control of the court to demonstrate their burgeoning skill sets. Bree Tobin and Julia Claus both got good looks both inside and outside, while Izzy Thiessen picked up second-chance opportunities from the low post. Julia Claus’ defensive efforts were rewarded with a steal, while Ashlyn Fink also worked the offensive boards as the Eagles took home their seventh victory of the season, 59-19.
