The SCA Varsity Girls' Basketball Team played host to the newest participant in the 2A Metro Region, the NFL YET Academy Eagles, who began the evening at the bottom of the Metro Region standings, on Thursday evening.
Coach Alan Mitchell used a settled starting lineup of senior Kathryn Dick (#35) and juniors Brooke Hancock (#4), Baylee Tobin (#21), Savannah Cardona (#22) and Lily Richardson (#44) to tip off the game. SCA started off smoothly under Lily Richardson’s ldirection, calmly moving the ball and controlling the game, as they would do throughout the contest. Baylee Tobin kicked off the scoring with the first of her many fast-break finishes, followed immediately by Kathryn Dick’s catch-and-shoot trey. Savannah Cardona also converted in transition, followed by Lily Richardson and then Brooke Hancock, as SCA smothered the limited NFL Yet offense and scored on the break to lead 16-0 after one.
In the second quarter coach Mitchell introduced junior Allyson Lund (#11), sophomore Ana Faustinos (#32), and freshmen Bree Tobin (#3), Julia Claus (#10) and Ashlyn Fink (#25), and this lineup continued the theme of aggressive defense resulting in counter-attacking points. Allyson Lund found Ana Faustinos on the break, while in the half-court offense Julia Claus demonstrated good court awareness to hit the entry pass assist from the perimeter and Ana Faustinos showed off her handles as she penetrated the NFL YET defense on the bounce to score repeatedly as SCA lead 30-7 at the half.
The second half comprised an explosion of offense from Savannah Cardona, Baylee Tobin and Brooke Hancock on easy buckets in transition, as well as Kathryn Dick dishing out four assists in a row to Brooke and Baylee posting up in the power slot. Savannah Cardona found her range from three and so did Lily Richardson, who also provided aggressive driving so as to go three-for-four from the charity stripe while keeping busy on defense with six steals. Over the course of the game Kathryn Dick, Baylee Tobin and Brooke Hancock all shot more than 50% effective rate from the field, and SCA entered the final frame up 56-10.
Bree Tobin and Julia Claus would complete the list of scorers, while freshman Izzy Thiessen (#30) swept up three rebounds in limited minutes on her return to action for the Eagles, who finished up 64-10 winners.
