The SCA Girls' Varsity Basketball team faced off against Oregon's representative at the Cactus Jam, Class 4A North Marion High School on a freezing Monday afternoon. Coach Bob Fredericks sent out sophomores Lily Richardson, Savannah Cardona, and Brooke Hancock with seniors Hayden Hancock and Jordan McDonald to compete with the Huskies for the fourth place position in the tournament.
After sterling play in the early games of the tournament, Lily Richardson earned a starting spot for the Eagles, and she immediately demonstrated her value at the point, setting up Savannah Cordona and Jordan McDonald for open triples as SCA started off hot early.
The Huskies showed their own mettle, pulling back into the lead, and senior Heather Hancock helped even up the height and rebounding quotient as Coach Bob Fredericks went with a big lineup. The big squad also included sophomore Baylee Tobin and junior Kathryn Dick, who began a driving and scoring campaign as the first half ended all tied at 24 points apiece.
The third period gave us freshman Daphne Garland, who emulated the slashing offensive stylings of Jordan McDonald and Kathryn Dick as the Eagles began to repeatedly tear open the Huskies defense on the drive. With Jordan McDonald and Savannah Cardona's three-point shooting on target, SCA entered the final quarter up 35 to 34.
As the game concluded, Brooke Hancock's eager running led to points over the top of the Huskies' full-court press, and Hayden Hancock knocked down high-pressure free throws to provide the necessary lead for the "hands team" of Jordan McDonald, Kathryn Dick, Lily Richardson, Brooke Hancock and Daphne Garland to finish off the tournament with a 44-42 win.
