The SCA Varsity Girls Basketball team made the long journey to Goodyear in the far west Valley on the Monday evening of the holiday celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. With senior Heather Hancock out of the lineup with injury, Coach Bob Fredericks sent out seniors Hayden Hancock and Jordan McDonald, junior Kathryn Dick, and sophomores Savannah Cardona and Brooke Hancock to prosecute their Arizona 2A Metro Region campaign against the Crimson Knights of Trivium Prep Academy.
The game tipped off with the Eagles looking as if the long weekend was not yet complete, and woeful shooting and sleepy ball possession meant that they struggled to score early. The SCA defense was in much better shape, holding the Knights to just two points in the first quarter, while Hayden Hancock, Kathryn Dick and Jordan McDonald all eventually scored inside.
The second period provided Brooke Hancock with more opportunities to get on the scoreboard both on the break and inside the half-court offense, while freshman Ana Faustinos entered the game to provide aggressive driving to the basket from the perimeter.
Under the direction of sophomore point guard Lily Richardson, Brooke Hancock found her range, scoring early and often in the half-court offense as the SCA entry passing game improved in the third period. Hayden Hancock in particular began to dish out assists from the high post. Jordan McDonald also locked in from the trey and went to the free throw line for easy buckets.
Sophomore Sophia Lane opened up the taps and began to knock down the long two and three-pointers in the final quarter, while Savannah Cardona owned and operated the corner three on both sides of the court. Sophomore Baylee Tobin engaged in a terrific low-post battle and earned her points at the free-throw line. A fearsome block from freshman Daphne Garland, who also made alert rebounding decisions, combined with earnest work in the low post from sophomore Annie Dyer meant that the Eagles' good defense never let up, and SCA ran out easy winners after a slow start.
Join us on Tuesday, January 21 for for the next 2A Metro regional game against Veritas Prep at 5:30PM.
