The SCA Eagles played host to the Payson High School Longhorns on Saturday afternoon, February 1. Coach Alan Mitchell took on the challenge of a strong Class 3A opponent with an experienced starting lineup of sophomores Lily Richardson, Allyson Lund, and Baylee Tobin along with freshmen Ana Faustinos and Daphne Garland.
The game started off with patient offense and good defensive work from both sides. Under the watchful guidance of Lily Richardson, the Eagles worked their offensive sets thoroughly, seeking out good looks and probing for the Longhorns' weaknesses. Allyson Lund started off what would be a career day with her outstanding positioning, aggressive rebounding, and excellent defensive footwork. Good perimeter passing from Ana Faustinos set up open lanes for Daphne Garland, who drove to score and obtain additional opportunities at the free throw line.
The teams kept pace, slowly finding scoring opportunities but more often then not showing their defensive prowess. Foremost among the defensive performers was Baylee Tobin, whose authoritative blocks set the tone for an Eagles defense that would slowly close out the Payson offense. Sophomore Annie Drye showed her willingness to put a body on an opponent as well, rebounding and boxing out with real force as SCA began to stretch into the lead.
The second half was particularly fruitful for the Eagles' scorers, with Ana Faustinos showing her pace to score on the break, Lily Richardson hitting the mid-range jumper, and Daphne Garland driving the lane to score as well. Baylee Tobin's inside scoring complemented her all-around defensive excellence, and SCA collected their fifth win to stay perfect on the season.
