The SCA Eagles left school early to travel south to Eloy on Tuesday, February 4, where the JV Girls faced the Santa Cruz Valley Union High School Dust Devils. With sophomore Annie Drye out, Coach Alan Mitchell's lineup included sophomores Lily Richardson, Allyson Lund, and Baylee Tobin along with freshmen Ana Faustinos and Daphne Garland.
The Eagles opened up the game as they intended to go on, operating a range of offensive sets intended to get open looks underneath and at the long line. Baylee Tobin operated from the power slot and also converted from the free throw line, fed on a steady diet of good entry passing. Lily Richardson not only provided this regular service to the low post, but also drove inside to take well-considered floaters as SCA built up a significant lead.
The second quarter saw more opportunities for Allyson Lund to drive from the flat for lay-ups to complement her increasingly competitive defensive and offensive rebounding skills. Daphne Garland had begun the game with a three-pointer, and she continued to knock down the long range shots throughout the match as the Eagles enjoyed a 20-point half-time lead.
In the second half, sophomore Sophia Lane enjoyed numerous open looks from the baseline and used the ball effectively to set up Daphne Garland for driving baskets. Ana Faustinos had ball-hawked the Dust Devil passing lanes for steals since the early minutes, and her alertness and court awareness led to fast break points both for her and for her teammates as the Eagles won their seventh and final match of the season.
Congratulations to all of the players on another excellent year of development and growth under the guidance of Coach Alan Mitchell!
