The SCA Eagles made the afternoon drive north to Sedona on Wednesday, where the Varsity Girls faced the Sedona Red Rock High School Scorpions. With the SCA squad looking for a 2A win on the road, Coach Bob Fredericks sent out seniors Jordan McDonald and Hayden Hancock, junior Kathryn Dick, and sophomores Brooke Hancock and Savannah Cardona.
The long bus ride seemed to have soothed the Eagles, who came our flat and struggled to hit their shots early. The Scorpions operated a full-court press that SCA broke regularly, but the lay-ups did not fall for the Eagles once the press was broken. Strong defense, including blocked shots from Brooke Hancock and Kathryn Dick, helped the Eagles keep the score low. Eventually Hayden Hancock knocked down the short corner jumper to break the seal, and Jordan McDonald struck twice from three, but SCA was down 13-9 after the first quarter.
The second quarter started off with an injury to Brooke Hancock, who rolled her ankle defending the break, shaking the Eagles. Sophomore Baylee Tobin entered the game to shore up the defense and provide good rebounding, and freshman Daphne Garland spelled Jordan McDonald who had gotten into early foul trouble. However, a shaken SCA failed to score at all in the period, going down 20-9 at the half.
In the second half, the Eagles outscored the Scorpions in both quarters. Kathryn Dick tied her career high for rebounds and was perfect from the free throw line, while sophomore Lily Richardson, Jordan McDonald and Savannah Cardona all scored from three in the third to cut into the Red Rock lead.
In the fourth quarter, outstanding passing from Savannah Cardona and Jordan McDonald to set up Hayden Hancock, a good high-low game between Brooke Hancock and Kathryn Dick, and more good outside shooting from Lily Richardson brought SCA to within five points of Sedona. Unfortunately winning the final two quarters was not enough to win the game, and the Eagles took the loss and a long ride home.
