The SCA Varsity Girls entered the Arizona 2A Metro Regional Tournament in the semi-finals against the Veritas Preparatory Academy Falcons on the Falcons' home court on Wednesday afternoon. Coach Bob Fredericks sent out seniors Jordan McDonald and Hayden Hancock, junior Kathryn Dick, and sophomores Brooke Hancock and Savannah Cardona in search of a berth in the Metro Regional Final.
The Eagles came out firing against the Falcons, with long-range shooting from Jordan McDonald, Savannah Cardona and Kathryn Dick who all knocked down at least one three-point shot in the first quarter as SCA jumped out to an early, commanding lead.
But it was not just good outside shooting that propelled the Eagles, as senior Heather Hancock ran the floor tirelessly, scoring without let or hindrance on the break. Hayden Hancock's aggressive drives from the perimeter impressed the crowd, and Savannah Cardona's quick hands on defense resulted in numerous steals, sparking the transition game, where Jordan McDonald and sophomore Lily Richardson found the rabbits for easy buckets. Meanwhile strong inside work from Baylee Tobin earned her points in the power slot and from the free throw line as SCA took a 30-7 lead into halftime.
The second half replicated the first, and in addition to the themes already mentioned, freshman Ana Faustinos showed a soft touch on floaters in the lane and long twos, while freshman Daphne Garland put points on the board with high-energy drives and fast break finishes.
Brooke Hancock, Hayden Hancock and Heather Hancock all blocked shots and demonstrated continued defensive awareness, and freshman Sophia Lane willingly took the open jumpers on offer in the motion offense. Sophomore Allyson Lund hit the buzzer-beating jump shot to close out the game and allow the Eagles to advance.
